UMAC Fall Asylum Evaluation Training 2024

The University of Michigan Asylum Collaborative (UMAC) is an interdisciplinary group of medical students, physicians, and legal professionals who advocate for victims and survivors of human rights violations and provide pro bono forensic medical evaluations for asylum applicants throughout Michigan. However, an increasing number of asylum seekers has led to the need to expand our pool of trained clinicians for these evaluations.

We invite you to participate in this year's training which is 2 parts: 1) Online Training through AMTI 2) In person training, Clinicians and Student Training from 6 pm – 8 pm on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Taubman Health Sciences Library.

UMAC has hosted several training sessions for students and physicians since its inception. These sessions are led by expert clinician-evaluators with extensive experience in asylum law and forensic physical and psychological evaluations. This training will equip you with the skills and materials needed to evaluate and document the physical and psychological sequelae of human rights abuses in survivors seeking humanitarian protection in the United States. After training, physicians and medical students can sign up to conduct forensic evaluations and draft medical affidavits to provide supporting evidence for the asylee and lawyer's case.

 Topics covered include:

  • A thorough background on the asylum process

  • How to perform a forensic medical evaluation

  • How to compose a corresponding medical affidavit to support an asylum applicant’s case
